Structure of 5\u03b1-Reductase Type 2: The enzyme 5\u03b1-reductase type 2 catalyzes the addition of a hydrogen atom to the 3-position carbon of testosterone, producing dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This enzyme uses NADPH as a cofactor, and its active site contains binding sites for both testosterone and NADPH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Binding of Finasteride: Finasteride binds to the active site of the 5\u03b1-reductase type 2 enzyme. This binding occurs as finasteride enters the enzyme’s active site, thereby inhibiting the enzyme’s interaction with testosterone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irreversible Binding: The binding of finasteride is irreversible. This is because finasteride reacts with the active site of the 5\u03b1-reductase type 2 enzyme, forming a covalent bond, which permanently deactivates the enzyme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inhibition of Testosterone Access: When finasteride binds to the enzyme, it blocks the testosterone binding site, preventing testosterone from accessing the active site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
